16th Annual Wickwar Football Frolics a Great Success
By Bob Banister, Wickwar Wanderers FC

The 16th Annual Wickwar Football Frolics was held on Saturday 28th June and 37 teams took part in the event.  The day was a great success especially with the youngsters of the village who had a great day.  Over 400 people attended the event which helped the club raise £1,600 to help provide new kits for the junior teams in the village. The event was sponsored by the Spar shop in Wickwar and a number of other local businesses supported the raffle by donating the prizes.

The club also held its end of season medals presentations for the junior teams and youngsters who play for the club each received a medal and each team also presented their Manager’s Player, Most Improved player and Players Player of the year awards.  This year Bond and Tremlin, probably the most popular builders in the village, who generously agreed to sponsor the awards.

The club also awarded Andy Minter the Manager of the season award in recognition of an outstanding season for the Under 15’s who won the cup, their league title and the league 6 a side tournament.  Stef Etherington picked up the “Clubman” of the year in recognition for his efforts as Chair of the fund raising committee and stepping in as Manager of the First eleven.

The club also celebrated being awarded Chartered Status by the Football Association which recognises that the club is well run and takes the appropriate measures to protect the health, safety and welfare of the children in their care.

Staging the event however, is only made possible by the hard work and commitment shown by those club members and parents of junior players who work so hard on the day to make it happen.  Thanks to all those involved in setting up the nets and pitches on the day, working behind the bar or sweets/refreshments stall, the referees, car park staff, PA announcer, administration and runners. Also a special mention though has to go to Wotton Ladies Circle who slaved over a hot barbeque for us andDave Taylor for his hard work and the use of the I.O.T company van.

On Behalf of the club and the 400 or so people who enjoyed the frolics I would like to personally thank all our sponsors and helpers for making the 16th Football frolics such a great event.

100 people who could not attend supported us by buying a programme and taking part in the lucky draw.  The winning programme number was 161 and anyone with that programme can claim their prize by presenting their winning programme to Bob or Linda Banister, 18 Canters Leaze, Wickwar.

Once again thank you to you all.
